I was grateful to have the DDU’s assistance during a PCT investigation into a patient’s complaint and delighted to be cleared.

However, no sooner had I breathed a sigh of relief than I was devastated to receive a negligence claim from the same patient’s solicitor. It really shook me to read the allegations being made and in those circumstances it is easy to start questioning oneself.

The DDU in-house solicitor and claims handler were totally professional and thorough in their response and listened to my side of the story. By forensically examining the various reports and statements, my solicitor spotted a few inconsistencies and responded to the solicitor refuting the claim. A little while later, I received a letter to say that the matter had been dropped.

During the three years these accusations were hanging over me, the DDU was fantastic. In fact, since I joined the DDU over thirty years ago they have never failed me.

In 2009, I received a letter from the GDC notifying me that it had received a complaint about my practice and I was being referred to an Investigating Committee.

In retrospect, I was probably quite naïve because I thought the matter would go no further as I had done nothing wrong. However, I’m so glad I contacted the DDU because my case eventually went to a gruelling 32-day panel hearing and I have my DDU legal team to thank for the fact that I was completely exonerated.

The DDU gave me fantastic support from the moment I contacted them, and I was particularly impressed by the hard work and diligence of the in-house solicitor who was totally meticulous in his preparation and completely committed to my cause.

The good reputation of our practice was threatened when someone posted untrue allegations about a long-standing staff member on the NHS Choices website. We were upset as we had previously only attracted positive comments on the site. What’s more, because the person was not actually a registered patient we had no way of contacting them as we usually would if we discovered that somebody was unhappy.

I asked the DDU for help managing this worrying situation. The DDU adviser helped me draft a letter to the website, setting out clearly and concisely why the allegations were untrue and attaching a signed statement from the staff member concerned. Some weeks later I was notified that the comment was being removed.

Without a shadow of a doubt, this outcome would not have been possible without the expert help of our DDU adviser who understood our options and helped us take the right approach.

A year after I had completed a patient's treatment I received a letter saying that they were going to make a claim against me. I was very upset that the patient was not happy with the outcome and I contacted the DDU for assistance straight away.

Over the next ten months, I was in regular communication with the DDU claims handler who was acting on my behalf. He explained what information I needed to provide; instructed an expert; and when it was clear that it would be difficult to defend the claim successfully, he sought my permission to reach a settlement.

I have not been practising for many years and this experience certainly caused me to lose a few nights' sleep. However, it was a great relief for me to know that I could depend on the DDU for help, advice and support.
