Doctors established the MDU in 1885 as a mutual organisation to protect the interests of their fellow professionals.
Today, the MDU is still a mutual company owned by our members, who include doctors, dentists and other healthcare professionals. As always, we remain dedicated to supporting the medico-legal needs and reputations of all our members throughout their professional lives.
The benefits of membership of the MDU are all discretionary and are subject to the Memorandum and Articles of Association.
MDU Services Ltd (MDUSL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the MDU.
MDUSL is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for insurance mediation and consumer credit activities only. MDUSL is entered in the The Financial Services Register, register number 312054. You can check MDUSL's registration on the Register or by contacting the FCA on 0845 606 1234.
The main aims of the FCA are:
For regulatory purposes (consumer credit and insurance mediation activities) the MDU is an introducer appointed representative for MDU Services Limited (MDUSL).
To obtain authorisation, MDUSL has had to go through a strict application process to ensure it meets the high standards set. This includes demonstrating that it treats customers fairly, is open and honest and has the necessary financial strength to meet its obligations. Ongoing regulation helps ensure that these high standards are maintained.
The FCA helps to enforce customers' rights and achieve a fair deal. More information can be found on the FCA website.
The Dental Defence Union (DDU) is the specialist dental division of the MDU. Our staff are dentists, lawyers and claims specialists who have an empathy and understanding for experiences of the profession and are experts in their field.
