DDU journal, summer 2022

DDU journal, summer '22 - dental professionals have a duty of care for their own health and wellbeing, just as they do for patients.

Dentistry is by nature a high-pressure job, where practitioners have felt the weight of expectation to provide high standards of care amid a growing complaints culture. And it's not unusual for dentists experiencing mental health issues to feel they are alone in their struggle.

And yet, nothing could be further from the truth. Mental health is a universal concern, especially in these troubled times - but might dentists be more susceptible to mental health issues and addiction?

In this issue of the DDU journal, we speak to Rory O'Connor of the Dentists' Health Support Trust, which provides advice, assessments and co-ordinating treatment for more than 2,000 practitioners. He explains the particular pressures that can push practitioners to breaking point, and how to ensure they get the specialised help and support they need to recover.
