The dento-legal advisory team provides key services DDU members rely on, such as the 24-hour advice line, education, guidance and support with complaints, claims and GDC matters.
Simon joined the DDU in 2020, first as a dento-telephone adviser and later as a dento-legal adviser. Previously, he worked as a general dental practitioner in Scotland for 17 years. In 2020, he also gained a master’s degree (LLM) in Healthcare Law and Ethics. He was also a vocational trainer for many years and represented dentists on advisory groups and committees including the LDC.
Simon takes over the role from John Makin, who has retired after more than 15 years with the defence organisation. John will remain at the DDU in an advisory role to support the transition.
On his appointment, Simon commented:
“I’m thrilled to be stepping into the role and am extremely proud of the outstanding work the DDU delivers for members. As a registered dentist, I understand the challenges of everyday practice and the pressures our members are under. It is a privilege to take up the baton from John and lead the DDU into this next chapter.”
On his upcoming retirement, John said:
“It has been an absolute pleasure and a privilege to work with such fantastic people over the past 15 years, not just within the DDU, but across the dental landscape.
“I’m grateful to have worked with fantastic colleagues both past and present. But it’s the heartful letters of thanks from members that really show their gratitude for the fantastic support that the DDU advisers give them in their hour of need that have made me most proud.
“I'm sure the MDU and DDU will continue to go from strength to strength and look after our professional colleagues as it has done for the last 140 years.”
